About me

Chief came to us after him owner was no longer able to keep him. Chief is a sweet boy but we have found that he really has not had much experience of the outside world and can struggle when out on a walk. We have been working on this and Chief has improved and is starting to enjoy his walks. Chief is currently in a foster home because he was struggling to cope in the kennels, so he really does need to find the right forever home. Below is an update from his fosterers.

Chief is currently in a foster home, but we're eager to help him find his forever family! This joyful and affectionate two-year-old boy has been with the RSPCA since February, and we can’t quite understand why he hasn't had many inquiries yet. Despite his challenging start in life, Chief has a truly joyful spirit and is so affectionate with the people the trusts.

Chief struggled in the kennel environment, particularly with the scary noises and other dogs barking which compounded the impact of his sad start in life. As a result, he can be a bit wary in new situations, both outdoors and at home, where even everyday items like tea towels and tape measures can seem intimidating. Chief will need a patient and compassionate family who can help him build confidence and gently guide him as he navigates new experiences.

In his foster home, Chief has come a long way. He’s learned commands like 'sit,' 'touch,' 'look at me,' 'down,' and 'settle,' and he’s even progressed from handling only 10 minutes alone to comfortably managing over an hour. Chief also loves scent work activities, which keep him busy and engaged at home. With time, he could build up to solo scent work classes, offering him the mental enrichment he loves. A family experienced in providing enrichment activities would be ideal to keep Chief’s mind active and fulfilled.

Chief’s family would need to have experience with socialising nervous dogs, and he would thrive in a home where his family can give him focused attention in the early stages to support his confidence building. At around 28kgs, Chief is a bigger boy, so he’ll need someone who can hold him confidently on the lead, with quiet walks initially, and slow exposure to unfamiliar dogs from a distance. Chief is accustomed to having off-lead time in secure, rented fields, so continuing this in his new home would be ideal as he builds up to exploring the larger world. Alternatively, Chief would be perfectly happy to keep his circle and exposure a bit smaller, with a spacious outdoor area at home, enjoying time with his special people and possibly even a confident and playful female canine companion.

Chief may be able to live with calm, older children in secondary school, as he can get a bit overwhelmed to begin with. Chief needs a family member based at home initially, with a gentle, gradual approach to being left alone over time. A private garden with 6ft fencing in a quiet neighbourhood is essential. Chief cannot live in a home cats or small animals.

Chief is a truly sweet soul who deserves a home that understands his needs and can help him grow in confidence. If you have the right environment and time to dedicate to this lovely boy, please consider filling out an application form.
